KYE Frequently Asked Questions2024-01-12T10:58:06-07:00

Below you will find a list of frequently asked questions related specifically to the Know Your Exposure (KYE) study.

If you have a question you don’t see here, please get in touch with us.

Thank you for being a part of Alberta’s largest research project!

What is the purpose of the Know Your Exposure study?2023-12-20T15:50:40-07:00
By participating in this study, you are helping us understand the current knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours about air pollution and occupational exposures related to cancer.  Participating may also help you build awareness of your personal air pollution and occupational exposures.
What is a “proof-of-concept” study?2023-12-20T15:39:47-07:00

Proof-of-concept studies are early-stage studies used to demonstrate whether a certain method or idea is feasible or if verifying the concept/theory has practical potential. A proof-of-concept study is normally smaller in scale.

Will I get reimbursed for the data used by my phone during this study?2023-12-20T15:40:06-07:00

Participation is voluntary and in order to participate, individuals will need to use a mobile device that has access to the internet.  Depending on the use of the app, we anticipate that the app will use less than 100MB of data.  There will be no reimbursement for the data used.

I want to participate but I only get ___G of data, will that be enough?2023-12-20T15:40:37-07:00

For the duration of the study period (2 weeks), depending on your use of the app, we anticipate that the app will use less than 100MB of data. Please check your data plan to ensure that it will be suitable for you.

How much data will be used?2023-12-20T15:40:57-07:00

We anticipate that the app will use less than 100MB of data, which is 1/10th of 1GB of data (1GB=1000MB).

Why am I not eligible to participate if I am not in Canada for the next 2-4 weeks?2023-12-20T15:41:31-07:00

The KYE application works with an existing Canada-based air pollution database to calculate air-pollution scores during commutes.

I am having difficulty finding my specific job on the Occupation section of the application. How should I proceed?2023-12-20T15:41:47-07:00

Try to search by a general term such as teacher, electrician, nursing aide, etc. rather than the complete job title.  Alternatively, try scrolling through the list of occupations until you find a close match.

What is the longest commute I can record in one tracking session?2023-12-20T15:42:16-07:00

The “Track Me” feature will max out after 2 hours.

If my commute takes me outside of Alberta, will the tracking feature work?2023-12-20T15:42:39-07:00

Yes, the “Track Me” section will still work if you are crossing a provincial border and you will still be provided with your average Air Pollution score.

I got asked to participate but my spouse who is also an ATP participant did not. Why?2023-12-20T15:43:05-07:00

For this proof-of-concept study, we plan to only enroll 300 ATP participants total and these participants will be randomly invited.  If selected for this study, you will be invited by email.

I have moved out of Alberta; can I still participate?2023-12-20T15:43:46-07:00

Yes!  Alberta’s Tomorrow Project continues to follow our participants even when they move out of the province or country, we just ask participants to update their contact information so we can continue to reach them.

Participants of the Know Your Exposure study will still be able to participate, provided they use the app within Canada.

How do you get the app to stop tracking?2023-12-20T15:44:43-07:00

When you choose to use the tracking feature, the app will use your location data to calculate an air pollution score.  This is done only when the app is in use.  Once you finish using the tracking feature, an air pollution score will be recorded.  No information, other than the final air pollution score, will be recorded.  Your GPS coordinates will never be stored by the app on your phone or on any server.

Will the app stop tracking after the project is over?2023-12-20T15:45:02-07:00

When the study is complete, you may continue to use the app or remove the app from your phone.

Do I have to complete the pre-intervention survey or post-intervention survey on a mobile device?2023-12-20T15:45:28-07:00

These surveys will work on a smartphone or a larger device like a desktop computer.

The KYE application will only work on an Android smartphone.  It will not work on a larger device.

When I go to login, I reach an ATP webpage instructing me to “Please Enter My PIN Number”. This step wasn’t in your invitation email so where can I get my PIN?2023-12-20T15:46:48-07:00

If you have reached the “Please Enter Your PIN Number” webpage (see picture below), your Account is not connected to the ATP Participant Portal.

There is a quick solution.

Please click the blue “Resend My PIN” button and follow the instructions to reset your account setting and have your PIN emailed to you.  After this, you will be able to enter your PIN, click submit, and reach the ATP Participant Portal.
