Access Guidelines and Procedures

Getting Started

Before applying for research access to Alberta’s Tomorrow Project data and/or biospecimens, researchers are encouraged to peruse our Summary Data Tables, our Survey Information, and our newly launched Data Dictionaries. The summaries and data dictionaries are updated regularly, so please check back often.

Researchers are also strongly encouraged to review our Approved Research Projects and Publications to ensure there are no comparable projects underway.

If ATP data fits with your research question, we are happy to provide a letter of support for funding. Please complete the to confirm that we have the data you need.  We will respond to your form submission within 5-10 business days. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

Here are simplified diagrams representing the Guidelines and Procedures for access to either biospecimens with data, or data alone:

Access Process

Requests for research access to Alberta’s Tomorrow Project data and/or biospecimens must follow a formal process laid out in our Access Guidelines and Procedures. First and foremost, the proposed research project must comply with ATP’s primary mission of advancing knowledge into the etiology of cancer and chronic diseases.

Researchers are encouraged to review our data and biospecimen collection history, and then have an informal discussion with a member of ATP’s research team.  Applicants who meet the following criteria will be considered for access to the ATP resource:

  • Applicant must be affiliated with a recognized academic or research institution
  • Applicant must be eligible for approval from a recognized ethics review board
  • Applicant must have, or be collaborating with a researcher with, prior peer-reviewed publications
  • Applicant must be able to demonstrate adequate funding for the proposed research
  • Applicant must consent to returning findings and derived variables to enrich the ATP dataset

Investigators who may be interested in accessing data and/or biological samples held by ATP are encouraged to peruse the descriptions of questionnaires and physical measurements, data dictionaries, published research, approved research projects, and guidelines for data access.
