Access Guidelines

Requests for research access to Alberta’s Tomorrow Project data and/or biospecimens must follow a formal process laid out in our Access Guidelines and Procedures. First and foremost, the proposed research project must comply with ATP’s primary mission of advancing knowledge into the etiology of cancer and chronic diseases.

Researchers are encouraged to review our data and biospecimen collection history, and then have an informal discussion with a member of ATP’s research team.  Applicants who meet the following criteria will be considered for access to the ATP resource:

  • Applicant must be affiliated with a recognized academic or research institution
  • Applicant must be eligible for approval from a recognized ethics review board
  • Applicant must have, or be collaborating with a researcher with, prior peer-reviewed publications
  • Applicant must be able to demonstrate adequate funding for the proposed research
  • Applicant must consent to returning findings and derived variables to enrich the ATP dataset

Here are simplified diagrams representing the Guidelines and Procedures for access to either biospecimens with data, or data alone:

If you want Data only:

Contact Alberta’s Tomorrow Project for an informal discussion.

Complete and submit application form, supporting documents, and fee.

ATP conducts Administrative Review to determine whether applicant is eligible.

Applicant form from applicant is:

  • complete,
  • includes research proposal, and has
  • appropriate ethical approval

Expedited review of research proposal by ATP.

If approved, execution of Research Agreement.

Release of encrypted data to researcher.

If you want Data & Biospecimens:

Contact Alberta’s Tomorrow Project for an informal discussion.

Complete and submit application form, supporting documents, and fee.

ATP conducts Administrative Review.

Biospecimen Access

Formal Review by ATP Access Review Panel.

If approved, execution of Research Agreement and Material Transfer Agreement.

Release of biospecimens and encrypted data to researcher.

Investigators who may be interested in accessing data and/or biological samples held by ATP are encouraged to peruse the descriptions of questionnaires and physical measurements, data dictionaries, published research, approved research projects, and guidelines for data access.
